Henning Gieseler is a licensed pharmacist in Germany since 2000, received his PhD in 2004 at the Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Erlangen (Prof. G. W. Lee) with the thesis: “Product Morphology and Drying Behavior delineated by a new Freeze-Drying Microbalance” and his “venia legendi” (Habilitation) in pharmaceutics at the University of Erlangen in 2010 with the thesis: “Quality by Design (QbD) in Freeze-Drying Using Advanced Process Analytical Technology (PAT)”. He is the founder and head of the Freeze Drying Focus Group (FDFG) at the University of Erlangen and currently supervises five PhD students. His current research interests include various aspects of freeze-drying, including (but not limited to): 1) process analytical technologies (PAT), 2) physicochemical characterization of API formulations, 3) heat and mass transfer from primary packing materials (vials and atypical containers), 4) freeze-drying formulation and process design for special applications (nanomaterials, fast dissolving tablets, etc.).
