Dr. Kevin R. Ward, Ph.D. MRSC
Director of Research and Development
Biopharma Technology Ltd.
Kevin has been in the world of freeze-drying for 18 years. After graduating in Applied Chemistry in 1993, he undertook a Ph.D. studying the freeze-drying of pharmaceutical formulations and drug/vaccine delivery systems, sponsored in part by the UK’s Health Protection Agency (then CAMR) at Porton Down. Kevin then worked for Pfizer in the UK and as a post-doctoral Research Fellow at Aston University, where he worked on the development of single-dose oral and nasal vaccines, before joining BTL in 2000. As Director of Research and Development at BTL, he leads collaborative research activity and oversees the delivery of client projects. In the past 11 years, he has had direct involvement in the freeze-drying R&D of a diverse range of over 1000 products for more than 350 clients worldwide. Such products range from small molecules to proteins, antibodies, liposomes, particulates, gels, slurries, nanoparticles, bacteria, vaccines and blood products. During this time, he has also arguably been the world’s most enthusiastic advocate for the use of freeze-drying microscopy and electrical impedance analysis in formulation characterization! He lectures regularly on the international stage, and has delivered over 100 training courses on the theory and practice of lyophilization to more than 2000 people. Since 2007, Kevin has also chaired the PHSS Freeze-Drying Special Interest Group, a working group that produces monographs on practical aspects of freeze-drying technology. He is also a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Academy of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the Society of Low Temperature Biology.
