Genevac announces that state-of-the-art condenser technology is enabling its HT Series 3 evaporator range to set a new benchmark for fast and efficient sample lyophilisation.

When working with certain solvents, such as HPLC solvents, a fully dried result can be hard to achieve due to interactions with the dissolved sample - resulting in the formation of a gum or oil. Lyophilisation is often the preferred method of sample drying in this case, achieving a high level of dryness with low residual solvent levels. The light, powdery finish of samples prepared in this way enables them to be easily removed and weighed out. However, Lyophilisation can be a time-consuming process.

The lower operating temperature (-75°C) of the condenser on the HT Series 3 evaporator, together with automatic solvent draining mid-run, has made Genevac’s proprietary FastLyo™ methodology (formerly LyoSpeed™)even more efficient. Using the improved FastLyo methodology on an HT Series 3 evaporator - now even the most difficult to handle aqueous / organic solvent mixtures can be removed to produce a clean lyophilised sample with a success rate as high as 96%.

Developments in Lab Scale Lyophilisation – For many years lyophilisation, or freeze drying, has been used to dry samples in the laboratory. Lyophilisation is often chosen because a high level of dryness is achieved and because of the light, powdery finish of the sample making it easy to weigh. However conventional lyophilisation techniques sometimes encounter difficulties.

How to avoid formation of oils and gums when drying HPLC fractions – Traditional concentration of reverse phase HPLC fractions to dryness in a centrifugal evaporator is a fast and safe process. However, for certain compounds a fully dried result can be hard to achieve due to compound interactions with water boosting up the boiling point making drying difficult.

An Enhanced Methodology for Safe, Rapid Freeze Drying of HPLC Fractions – Drying HPLC purification fractions, such as water and acetonitrile, is a routine yet essential task in many laboratories. The requirement is to dry the samples to a powder form, such that samples can be accurately weighed, easily sub-sampled and redissolved. However, large scale traditional freeze driers may have difficulty processing the organic solvents which can boil out of the samples and damage the vacuum pump.

Faster drying of HPLC Fractions – Common HPLC solvent mixtures such as aceonitrile/water or methanol/water often pose a problem to dry effectively.
